 Brazilian Typography and Caligraphy shows, to the world, they have a lot to offer. The award for the brazilian typeface “Samba” at the “International Linotype Library Type Design Contest”, is an example. The typographers Tony de Marco and Caio de Marco got the third prize on “Display Font” category with the typeface “Samba”, this typeface is going to be part of the Linotype Library. In the next catalog of the biggest typefoundry in the world, the brazilian typeface will be standing side by side with classics like Helvetica, Times, Univers, Futura, and others. The Award Cerimony took place in San Francisco, during Typecon, the annual conference of SOTA (The Society of Typographic Aficionados). Inspired by J.Carlos' illustrations (which dominated the publishing scene between 1900 and 1950), Tony and Caio developed three alphabets that transcends the Art Deco influences, modernizing the style. The plants spiral growing and the typical iron grids from windows and gates, were the inspirations for the letters creation. An unheard system allows the font, to combine the three versions (plain, bold and expert) of the same typeface, without loosing composition. The possibilities are multiplied, since the pair are planning to add new fonts to the same family. The “de Marco” brothers are working to release the first brazilian typefoundry, called “Just in Type“, to sell their new typographic families on the web. Tony de Marco was an illustrator at Folha de S. Paulo (Brazil largest newspaper), createing fonts for "Notícias Populares" newspaper and another 30 fonts are becoming presented on the recently released “Fontes Digitais Brasileiras” (ADG's catalog, Associação dos Designers Gráficos-Brasil). Currently he is the publisher of the magazines Macmania (on Macintosh computers) and Tupigrafia (about typography and calligraphy). Caio de Marco is a VJ (Visual-Jockey) and designer, having graduated from Faculdade Senac de Comunicação e Artes.
